About

Preserving the cultural landscapes and historical memory of Northern Morocco

Project 250 Heritage is a digital humanities initiative dedicated to mapping, documenting, and safeguarding the rich historical tapestry of Northern Morocco. Serving as a bridge between the Mediterranean and Africa, this region—stretching from the vibrant streets of Tangier and the historic medina of Tétouan to the rugged peaks of the Rif—has been a vital crossroads of civilizations for millennia.

Our platform functions as an open-access digital archive, systematically cataloging the physical sites, architectural marvels, and cultural milestones that define the northern frontier. By utilizing modern archival standards, we aim to make the history of this unique landscape accessible to researchers, educators, and the global public.

Why 250 Sites?

The number 250 represents a curated scope of key cultural, maritime, military, and religious landmarks across the region. These sites include Phoenician and Roman ruins, Andalusian-influenced medinas, protective coastal fortifications, and remote mountain sanctuaries. Each selected site serves as a portal into a specific era, collectively forming a comprehensive timeline of the North's evolution.

Our Objectives

1. Digital Preservation

Digitizing fragile physical materials—including rare historical maps, architectural blueprints, and archival photographs—to protect them against the wear of time.

2. Standardized Cataloging

Organizing regional history using metadata standards (Dublin Core). This ensures that items are easily searchable, cross-referenced, and ready for academic research.

3. Community and Oral Histories

Gathering the lived experiences and local lore of the communities residing around these heritage sites, ensuring intangible history is preserved alongside physical structures.

We invite you to explore our growing collections, read our curated historical stories, and rediscover the frontier heritage of Northern Morocco.
